How to calculate a discount

Convert the percentage discount to a decimal, multiply it by the original price, and subtract that amount from the original price. A 30% discount on a $120 item saves $36 and produces an $84 sale price before tax.

To find a discount percentage from two prices, subtract the sale price from the original price, divide the difference by the original price, and multiply by 100.

To recover an original price, divide the sale price by the remaining percentage. An item sold at 25% off retains 75% of its original price, so the sale price is divided by 0.75.

Understanding stacked discounts

Discounts are sequential

A second discount applies to the already reduced price. A 20% discount followed by 10% off creates a 28% effective discount, not 30%.

Tax is calculated separately

This tool applies tax after all discounts. Local rules may treat coupons, shipping, fees, or tax-exempt items differently.

Quantity changes totals

The per-item discount stays the same, while original subtotal, savings, tax, and final total scale with quantity.

Rounding may differ

Retailers may round each line item, tax component, or order total differently, causing small checkout differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Discount Calculator free?+

Yes. You can calculate sale prices, discounts, taxes, quantities, and savings without creating an account.

Are the prices I enter uploaded?+

No. Every calculation runs locally in your browser, so your entered values remain on your device.

How do I calculate 30% off?+

Multiply the original price by 0.70, because a 30% discount leaves 70% of the price to pay.

Are two discounts added together?+

Usually not. Successive discounts are applied one after another. For example, 20% off followed by 10% off produces a 28% effective discount.

Can I find the original price from a sale price?+

Yes. Select Original price, enter the sale price and discount percentage, and the calculator will recover the estimated pre-discount price.

Can I find the discount percentage?+

Yes. Select Discount %, enter the original price and sale price, and the percentage difference will be calculated automatically.

Does the final price include sales tax?+

Yes, when you enter a tax rate. The estimate applies tax after the primary and additional discounts.

Why might a store total be slightly different?+

Retailer rounding, tax rules, coupon exclusions, fees, and the order in which promotions are applied can change the final checkout amount.
