How GPA is calculated

GPA is a credit-weighted average. Each course grade is converted to a grade-point value, multiplied by the course credits to create quality points, and then divided by the total GPA-bearing credits.

A four-credit course therefore affects GPA more than a one-credit course. Courses marked as excluded in this calculator contribute neither credits nor quality points.

Schools do not all use the same grading rules. Confirm the exact grade-point scale, repeat-course policy, pass/fail treatment, and rounding rules used by your institution before treating any estimate as official.

Semester, cumulative, and target GPA

Semester GPA

Uses only the courses currently entered in the calculator and weights every included grade by its credits.

Cumulative GPA

Combines the current courses with your previous GPA and completed credits when previous coursework is enabled.

Target planning

Calculates the average grade-point value needed across a chosen number of future credits to reach a cumulative target.

Maximum-GPA scenario

Estimates how many additional credits at the scale maximum would be needed when your target is above the current cumulative GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate GPA?+

Multiply each course's grade-point value by its credits, add all quality points, and divide by the total credits included in GPA.

Can I calculate my cumulative GPA?+

Yes. Enable previous coursework, enter your existing cumulative GPA and completed credits, then add the new courses.

Which grading scales are supported?+

The calculator includes a common 4.0 plus/minus scale, a simple 4.0 scale, a 4.33 scale, percentage-to-4.0 mapping, and custom grade points.

Can I exclude pass/fail or withdrawn courses?+

Yes. Turn off Include in GPA for any course that your institution excludes from GPA calculations.

Can this calculator predict the GPA I need next semester?+

Yes. Enter a target cumulative GPA and the number of future credits you expect to take. The planner estimates the average grade-point value needed across those credits.

Is this GPA result official?+

No. It is an estimate based on the values and scale you enter. Institutional grading, repeat-course, rounding, and credit policies can differ.

Is my course information uploaded?+

No. Calculations run locally in your browser, and Xepoca does not upload your course data.
